When the bone cells are divided uncontrollably and forms a mass or a tumour, bone cancer develops. Bone cancer can develop in various parts of your body. It can develop in whichever bone or can develop in some other organ, get metastasized and affect the bones. For example a lung cancer during the later stage can spread to the bones and can affect it too. When a bone cancer originates in the bone itself, it is called primary bone cancer. When a cancer from some other organ gets metastasized and spread to Bone to form bone cancer, it is called Secondary bone cancer. Bone cancers are usually rare. The most common region of the body where bone cancer can be formed is pelvis.

TYPES OF BONE CANCER-

Bone cancer can be distinguished into several types. The major among them are-

  • Osteosarcoma –

Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that develops in the cells that form bones. Osteosarcoma is the most common variety of bone cancer. It is more often seen in children and teens.

  • Chondrosarcoma-

Chondrosarcoma is the second most common type of bone cancer. It develops in cartilage cells. Cartilage is a major connective tissue found throughout the body. It serves many purposes. Chondrosarcoma effects bone of femur and pelvis. It affects adults to a large extent.

  • Ewing sarcoma-

Ewing sarcoma develops in the bones or in the soft tissues surrounding the bones. The cancer is names after the American doctor- James Ewing, who discovered it. It mostly develops in hip bone, femur, skin bone, and humerus. It is more often seen in adolescents.

CAUSES OF BONE CANCER-

The exact cause of bone cancer is unknown till date. Some cases have been linked to the genes whereas some cases have been related to the previous radiation exposure.

SYMPTOMS OF BONE CANCER-

Common symptoms of a bone cancer include

  • frequent bone pain that turns out even worse during night time
  • a sudden and unintended weight loss
  • swollen knees, arms, thigh, hips or anywhere near the area you’ve had been experiencing pain
  • fatigue
  • A weak bone.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTOR FOR BONE CANCER?

The risk factors of bone cancer are as follow:

  • Hereditary factor- You are at the risk to develop bone cancer if your family has a history of it.
  • Paget’s disease of bone- Paget’s disease is a disease which interrupts or even stops the natural process of replacement of old bone tissues by new ones . If you’ve had Paget’s disease before, you’re at the risk to develop bone cancer.
  • Exposure to radiation- If you’ve had been previously exposed to radiation, then again you’re at the risk to develop bone cancer.

TREATMENTS AND MEDICATIONS BONE CANCER-

Cancer can be diagnosed through X-rays, CT scan, MRI scan, PET scan and bone scan. Cancer if diagnosed early can be treated much easier and better. Treatments of bone cancer depend on its stage. It can be treated via surgery, therapy and radiation. Surgery for bone cancer includes bone grafting, Arthrodesis, Amputation, wide local excision and limb sparing surgical resection. Besides radiation therapy, targeted therapy too aims to treat bone cancer. Targeted therapy aims certain genetic, protein or other changes in or around cancer cells.

CAN BONE CANCER BE PREVENTED?

There is no exact cause known for bone cancer and hence not a single way to prevent it has been discovered. It is better to visit a doctor if you have any of the risk factor or have been experiencing some of the symptoms lately. Remember, cancer can be treated better if diagnosed early.

Bone cancer is usually rare. A visit to a doctor is must if you feel like you’ve developed one of it. A good care of bones might help you to a large extent.
